Gotthard Pentecost Traffic 2026

Pentecost is one of the busiest weekends of the year at the Gotthard Tunnel. The reason: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and the Netherlands all have the holiday at the same time. Travellers from six countries head south simultaneously. Based on the real traffic data from Pentecost 2025, we show you what to expect for Pentecost 2026.

2026 forecast based on the 2025 data

During Pentecost 2025 (Whit Sunday on 8 June) we measured the queue lengths at both portals around the clock. The pattern has repeated for years and gives a reliable forecast for Pentecost 2026 (Whit Sunday on 24 May).

The worst day: Whit Saturday

Whit Saturday is by far the worst day. In 2025 the queue at the north portal in Goeschenen was already over 8 km at 05:00 in the morning and stayed at a minimum of 5 km for the whole day. Anyone who thought they could beat the jam by leaving early was stuck in it too.

Forecast Whit Saturday, 23 May 2026: southbound queues continuously from midnight until around 19:00. Anyone who has to travel should cross the Gotthard before 23:00 on Friday or after 19:00 on Saturday.

The underestimated second wave: the following Saturday

What many people overlook: Pentecost is not a single weekend, it spreads across ten days. Families on the Pentecost school break only return on the following Saturday, while the first summer-holiday travellers are already setting off.

In 2025 the Saturday of 14 June, with more than 7 km southbound and more than 6 km northbound, was the second busiest day of the entire period. Both directions were heavy at the same time between 07:00 and 17:00.

Forecast Saturday, 30 May 2026: both directions with queues of at least 6 km. The best window is probably before 06:00 or after 18:00.

Alternatives to the Gotthard Tunnel

San Bernardino Tunnel (A13)

The A13 from Chur to Bellinzona is the most important alternative route. The trip takes around 45 minutes longer than the Gotthard, but is usually far less busy even at Pentecost. On peak days, however, traffic can build up here too.

Gotthard Pass road

The Gotthard Pass is usually open by late May and is a scenically impressive alternative. The drive takes considerably longer and is not suitable for vehicles with a trailer or caravan. Read more in our comparison Gotthard Pass vs. Gotthard Tunnel.

Train and public transport

The train avoids the jam entirely. The EuroCity from Munich to Milan, the SBB connections and long-distance coaches run on fixed schedules through the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Anyone who wants to take the car along can use the car-carrying train.

FAQ

When is the Gotthard busiest at Pentecost 2026?

The worst day is Whit Saturday (23 May 2026). Based on the 2025 data, southbound queues are expected continuously from midnight until 19:00, with peaks of more than 8 km in front of the north portal in Goeschenen. The following Saturday (30 May 2026) will also be very busy, but then in both directions at the same time.

How long will I have to wait at the Gotthard at Pentecost 2026?

The direct queue waiting times at the portal reached up to 80 minutes in 2025. With approach traffic, slow crawling and the tunnel passage, travellers should realistically allow two to three hours of extra travel time on peak days. Driving early in the morning before 06:00 or late in the evening after 19:00 reduces the waiting time considerably.

Which day is the worst after Pentecost?

Whit Tuesday is the peak return day. In 2025 the queue at the south portal in Airolo reached more than 7 km. Anyone with flexibility should bring the return forward to Whit Monday (much calmer) or wait until Wednesday.

What alternatives are there to the Gotthard Tunnel?

The most important alternative route is the San Bernardino Tunnel via the A13 (Chur to Bellinzona). The route takes around 45 minutes longer but is far more relaxed at Pentecost. The Gotthard Pass is usually open by late May, but is not suitable for vehicles with a trailer. Anyone who can travel without a car is best off taking the train.

Do I need a vignette for the Gotthard Tunnel?

Yes. To drive through the Gotthard Tunnel on the Swiss motorway you need the Swiss motorway vignette. It costs 40 francs and is valid for one calendar year. Without a vignette you risk a fine of 200 francs. All the details on tolls and costs are in the article Tolls and costs at the Gotthard Tunnel.
